After a brief apprenticeship working with the Belgian lettering sculptor, Pieter Boudens in Brugges, Eric worked as a freelance lettercutter in London for five years before moving to Cambridge in 1989 to work at the restoration firm of Rattee and Kett but switched to David Kindersley’s Workshop when offered the opportunity in 1990. He worked there until 1995 when he left to become the sole letter carver at The Carving Workshop also in Cambridge where he could pursue his own commissions as well as exhibit under his own name.
In 1998 Eric set up on his own again and soon moved into the former mortuary chapel of the picturesque Parish of the Ascension Burial Ground in Cambridge where he carried out commissions and taught courses in letter carving.
