Eric Marland

Born in Cambridge, Massachusettes, I came to England to study Restoration at the City and Guilds of London Art School in the early 1980s.

After a brief apprenticeship working with the Belgian lettering sculptor, Pieter Boudens in Brugges, I worked as a freelance lettercutter in London for five years before moving to Cambridge in 1989 to work at the restoration firm of Rattee and Kett but switched to David Kindersley’s Workshop when offered the opportunity in 1990. I worked there until 1995 when I left to become the sole letter carver at The Carving Workshop also in Cambridge where I could pursue my own commissions as well as exhibit under my own name.

In 1998 I set up on my own again and soon moved into the former mortuary chapel of the picturesque Parish of the Ascension Burial Ground in Cambridge where I carry out commissions and teach courses in letter carving.
