Tanja Bolenz

I am lucky to work in three crafts: book binding, calligraphy and letter cutting in stone. I enjoy combining my skills and like to play and explore new ways of expressing myself in lettering: drawn on paper, carved in stone, painted on wood, stone or paper or executed with a broad edged pen. Designing my ‘own’ letters is an integral part in my work and provides the joy and satisfaction I gain in my craft. I exhibit regularly.

After gaining my BA (Hons) in Calligraphy at Roehamton Institute in 1997 I trained with letter designer Tom Perkins, followed by a HND in Architectural Stonemasonry and Carving from Bournemouth University in 2001. In 2004/5 I worked with Wolfgang Jakob in Freiburg and gained my German journeyman diploma in stone carving

I am a fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) and a full member of the Lettering Arts Trust.

Since moving to mid Wales in 2018 I run my own lettering studio where I work mostly to commission and teach classes in book binding and calligraphy.
