Susie Leiper

My unconventional but rigorous calligraphic training as a scribe on Donald Jackson’s magnificent Saint John’s Bible not only instilled in me a love of sustained writing but also kindled the desire to take calligraphy and lettering further by interfusing it with painting.

Working on everything from vast walls and canvases to small wooden tablets and artist books, I sometimes combine words and abstract imagery, and sometimes treat the words themselves as the subject.

I exhibit regularly, both in group and solo shows, and fulfil a growing number of special commissions. Public collections include the British Museum, Edinburgh College of Art Library, Fitzwilliam Museum, National Library of Scotland, National Museums of Scotland, Royal Collection and V&A Dundee. A Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, I live and work in Edinburgh, where I am a member of an artist book collective, bound : unbound, and serve on the council of Visual Arts Scotland.
