Peter Coates

I received formal tuition in stonemasonry, carving and lettering before training as an architectural sculptor at English Heritage Stonecarving studio and subsequently working at York Minster followed by Dick Reid’s Workshop in York.

I established my own studio in 1995 also beginning working in collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay which has resulted in a series of international commissions both public and private alongside works in Finlay’s garden, Little Sparta.

Moving to the Vale of Pickering, North Yorks, has enabled the building of a new studio which now accommodates an increasingly varied range of work. A recently completed NESTA Fellowship exploring diversity of materials and collaborative working with new media is informing new directions.
