Nicholas Sloan

Nicholas Sloan has been enchanted by lettering since childhood. He learned lettercutting from David Holgate, and has been a freelance lettercutter since 1975. In addition he owns a letterpress private press and undertakes all sorts of lettering design work.

Since 1978 he has worked with the poet Ian Hamilton Finlay specialising in very large stone pieces. Nicholas Sloan enjoys a mix of work: on the one hand simple and traditional headstones, especially in slate; on the other, working on a large scale using innovative materials and new technology. Evolving particular letter forms for individual jobs is always a delight.
