Martin Wenham

Originally trained as a plant biologist (though with an interest in lettering from childhood), I left full-time research in 1967, having been shown the basics of letter-carving in wood by a professional carver. Subsequently I developed my own designs and techniques while working full-time until 1998 in various branches of education.

During this time I taught occasional courses at City and Guilds Art School and for twenty years, until 2011, short courses at West Dean College.

I work in a wide variety of media and occasionally undertake public commissions, but most of my work is small in scale, carved in wood and painted in acrylic on wood or paper. I have a particular interest in working on recycled and found materials.

A book on letter-carving in wood will be published in 2022 by Crowood Press. I am represented by Goldmark Gallery.
