Manny Ling

Being a Chinese person educated as an artist and designer in the West has had a profound influence on my life. I am fascinated by the theme of ‘contrasts and contradictions’ and ‘crossing boundaries’ in my work and I also like to explore the notion of East and West, the handmade and digital, old and new, energy and stillness, simplicity and complexity and control and spontaneity.

Since 2000, I was the Director of the International Research Centre for Calligraphy (IRCC) at the University of Sunderland which has gained an international reputation for the range of impactful research activities such as the curation of calligraphy symposia, exhibitions and publications.

My work is featured in numerous publications and is held in public collections such as the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Special Collection at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

I am currently working as a Senior Program Manager in RMIT University, Vietnam.
