Ieuan Rees

[1941–2025]

Design was always the most important aspect of calligraphy and lettercarving for Ieuan. When someone looks at a headstone it is the design they see first and are drawn to. The craftsmanship can only be appreciated on inspection.

Ieuan was born in 1941 in Carmarthenshire, Wales and attended Carmarthen School of Art and then Camberwell and the Royal College of Art in London. From 1966 he worked as a freelance designer/craftsman, and also valued the opportunity to pass on his knowledge through teaching. A huge amount of Ieuan’s work was commissioned, leaving little time to persue his ‘own work’, however, the diverse demands of clients encouraged him to be more versatile and to make him think sideways and be more imaginative.
