Helene C Jenssen

I graduated from Roehampton Institute, University of Surrey in 1998 (BA Calligraphy and Bookbinding), and have since lived and worked as a calligrapher, graphic designer and bookbinder in Oslo, Norway.

When I am not in my studio I am working part time as a Communications Consultant and Content Creator at Oslo by steinerskole (Sixth form college), and I am a visiting lecturer in calligraphy at NTNU Gjøvik (The Norwegian University of Science and Technology). I undertake commissions, ranging from more traditional calligraphic work to commissions from agencies, publishers and film/TV companies. I have exhibited in several European countries, most recently as part of the group exhibition ‘Scripta Manent’ in Alcoi, Spain.

As an artist I like to explore the rhythm and music in writing, and textures created by letters. I love the combination of handwriting and letterpress, dry point or other letter creating techniques. Working as a calligrapher is similar to being a musician, but instead of singing the lyrics, I write, draw or print them.
