Ewan Clayton

I am a calligrapher and lettering-artist based in Brighton: a maker, a writer and a teacher. I am part-time professor in Design at the University of Sunderland and a core faculty member of the Royal Drawing School. I also teach on type design programmes for Cooper Union in New York City, the Letterform Archive in San Francisco and the University of Reading.

In the 80s and 90s I worked as a consultant for Xerox PARC looking at the future of digital documents, out of this work came my book on the history of writing The Golden Thread (Atlantic 2013). In 2019 I was the advisor and catalogue editor to Writing Making Your Mark, a British Library exhibition that asked about the future of writing through exploring 5000 years of writing history over 44 writing systems. My main enjoyment is making calligraphic work and teaching in person at my Brighton studio.
