Chris Elsey

[1956–2023]

Christopher Elsey was taught lettercutting and drawing by Tom Perkins before and during four years study in the lettering arts. Two years at Reigate School of Art and Design were followed by a single Honours Degree in calligraphy from Froebel College Roehampton.


The majority of Christopher’s work is the designing and carving of inscriptions in stone and slate. This includes work for Memorials by Artists and text for church buildings. His later work on signwriting projects for the Churches Conservation Trust was executed in collaboration with Gaynor Goff and Tom Perkins.
