Andrew Whittle

Andrew Whittle is a leading lettercutter (letter carver). He has an international reputation built up over the course of a career of thirty years which has encompassed many major public and private commissions. Andrew works in stone, wood and metal always designing an alphabet specific to the material and situation.


In 1982, Andrew founded the lettercutting course at Weymouth College where he taught for sixteen years. Since leaving there he has led many short courses for the Memorial Arts Charity and is credited with enthusing many of todays younger lettercutters.

He has an extensive knowledge of the history of lettering which he happily plunders to design contemporary letterforms. This research is central to his teaching as well as his design practise.
