Andreu Balius

Typographer and type designer based in Barcelona. Andreu develops both commissioned type design work and self-initiated projects, involving research and cultural awareness.

Andreu Balius is a type designer and digital punchcutter based in Barcelona, Spain. He has been involved in digital type design since the late 1980s, although he maintains a deep appreciation for letterpress and the scent of ink.
His interest in research provides him with a profound understanding of the local aspects of Spanish typography, with several of his typefaces drawing inspiration from historical contexts. He has created custom typefaces for clients such as SEAT/Volkswagen, Arte TV, Victoria’s Secret, Abu Dhabi Ports, or Acciona, among others.

Currently, Balius is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale), TDC (Type Directors Club), and ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale). He holds a PhD in Design from the University of Southampton and teaches typography and type design at EINA, University School of Design and Art, in Barcelona. Beyond his professional endeavours, he enjoys hiking and mountain biking.
